Bre Andy
Bio: Bre Andy, based in Brooklyn, NY via Baltimore
Artist Statement: Bre's works on paper are a personal exploration through her gaze of the nuanced individuality and influence of black femininity and livelihood. Portraying figures calmly postured within their day-to-day atmosphere, or a scene of juxtaposed inanimate objects is done intentionally, as she finds that even mundane moments can call to the subject's true expression. Depicting these stylized portraits and still life serve as an emphasis on the beauty in the ability for us to be present in their identities while simultaneously being perceived and rejected by society's standards. Each figure holds the viewer's gaze as they casually exist within their space on the composition; an acknowledgement of their right to hold this space as-is, without performance or explanation. Keeping skin tones in black and grayscale charcoal to contrast with the vibrant, dry pastels used for clothing and background, allows for the viewer to see each figure without the attachment of colorist hierarchies or stereotypes and to eliminate the question of their race. Bre is moving to working within oil paint and expanding her subject matter to reflect other identities as well.
